The best jeans to wear for fall and how to style them

Now that it's October, autumn is in full swing. With that, wardrobes usually change or need some spicing up. Here's a fool-proof guide to jean washes, styles and how to wear them:

Skinny jeans

Skinny jeans are quite the staple for many. If you couldn't tell by the name, they are skin-tight and have no flare to the legs. They come in washes like light and dark and fit seamlessly into boots due to their skinny bottom. It's also not uncommon to see skinny jeans in a high-waisted style (meaning they rest at the belly-button level rather than the waist). These can be perfectly paired with a chunky cropped sweater and, of course, your favorite pair of booties. Old Navy has a really solid crop of skinny jeans and would be a great place to look.

Mom jeans

Mom jeans are slightly baggier than skinny jeans, high-waisted and usually light-wash. These jeans give off major 80's vibes, as that's when they first became popular. Mom jeans look best paired with your favorite pair of high-top Converse and a more form-fitting top, as wearing a baggy shirt with baggy pants can give off a less put-together feel.

Boyfriend jeans

Though some may argue that boyfriend jeans are no different than mom jeans, there is a slight difference. Boyfriend jeans are straight-legged, while mom jeans taper slightly at the ankles. Boyfriend jeans also sit a little lower than the belly button. As with mom jeans, a tighter, more form-fitting shirt would be most flattering due to the looser fit of the jeans. A more dainty and feminine-styled shirt also couldn't hurt due to the jeans' somewhat "boyish" fit.

Girlfriend jeans

Girlfriend jeans are basically the more feminine version of boyfriend jeans. Girlfriend jeans sit higher on the hips (unlike boyfriend jeans) and have a slimmer straight-leg fit (unlike mom jeans). Macy's would be a good place to start. Girlfriend jeans are a "middle ground" type of jeans (not too loose but not too tight); your top can match that energy. Either a form-fitting or looser top would each work when rocking girlfriend jeans. Regarding shoes, a low-top sneaker would work fine and perfectly complement the cuffed denim.

Flare jeans

As the name suggests, these jeans flare at the bottom and are quite literally the opposite of skinny jeans. This type of jeans is also known as 'bell-bottom.' Flare jeans come in various washes, though it's slightly more common to see them in a dark wash. Boots, unfortunately, wouldn't be the best kick to rock with Bell-bottoms. Either a high or low-top sneaker would work just fine. As far as what to wear on top, you can never go wrong with a simple T-shirt. If you want to spice it up a little more, a chunky cable-knit cardigan would totally sell the whole "boho" vibe. Free People has a great selection to get you started.

Dad jeans

Mom jeans, girlfriend jeans, boyfriend jeans, and now dad jeans? Yep, they exist. Mom jeans accentuate curves more, while dad jeans are baggy throughout the legs and give you little to no shape. They are as the name suggests – the type of jeans dads wear. Pacsun has quite the display. Though the fashion police suggest not pairing a baggy top with baggy jeans, it's actually a little more common to rock dad jeans with a looser, baggier top. If you pair these two items with your favorite pair of sneakers, you'll be all set!

These are all just suggestions. Don't let them keep you from rocking your favorite mom jeans with the largest T-shirt you can find or skinny jeans with a tight, form-fitting top. Happy fall, and happy jeans shopping!
