6 new movies to watch over Thanksgiving break

For most college students, Thanksgiving break is an opportunity to unwind and relieve some of that post-midterm stress by eating ungodly amounts of delicious food and lounging in sweatpants all day. It’s also a time to go hit the theaters after a year when seeing movies wasn’t even a possibility. Here’s a few movies to look out for this Thanksgiving break:

Encanto

Disney’s new animated film comes in the form of a heartwarming family musical. With songs by Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda, the plot focuses on Mirabela, a girl who lives with her magically talented family in the mountains of Colombia.

The title of the film refers to where the family resides, a place called Encanto. Mirabela faces challenges when she realizes she’s the only member of her family without magical powers. When her family’s magic becomes endangered, it’s up to Mirabela to save them all. The question is: Will she be able to? Encanto premieres Nov. 24 in theaters everywhere.

House of Gucci

Starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver, along with a star-studded cast, this much anticipated drama is about the infamous murder of fashion mogul Maurizio Gucci.

Set in 1995, the plot follows the events leading up to and eventually following Gucci’s assassination. The movie highlights how Gucci’s death affected not only his family but also the fashion world. Told from his wife Patrizia’s perspective, the film’s tone is seductive and slightly evil, which will leave fans on the edge of their seats. Watch out for this movie’s release date on Nov. 24.

The Humans

A new A24 film is finally here! Based on Stephen Karam’s Tony-award winning play, The Humans acts as a relatable, family-centered drama. Ironically, the film is set during Thanksgiving as well. It starts with a family known as The Blakes, who are gathering at Brigid Blake (Beanie Feldstein) and her boyfriend’s, Richard (Stephen Yeun), rundown New York City apartment.

Somehow, the holiday dinner evolves into a slow and subtle unraveling of the conflicts and issues that various family members have repressed over the years. This movie’s trailer looks filled with emotions and is likely to make fans beg for tissues by the end of it. Make sure to catch this tear-jerker in theaters on Nov. 24.
