Volleyball: Ohio to face Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan this weekend

Ohio (1–14, 1–3 MAC) will be celebrating Homecoming weekend with two matches in The Convo. It will take on two members of the Mid-American Conference West Division, Eastern Michigan (6–9, 1–3 MAC) and Central Michigan (7–9, 1–3 MAC).

All three programs are currently 1–3 in the MAC. Ohio is fifth in the MAC East, Central Michigan is fifth in the MAC West and Eastern Michigan is sixth in the MAC West. However, both of Ohio’s opponents have won six or more matches this season.

In their previous series, the Chippewas were swept by Western Michigan and the Eagles split with Northern Illinois. The Bobcats, on the other hand, were swept by Ball State.

Match History

Eastern Michigan

The Bobcats are 14–2 against the Eagles since 2004, however, both losses have occurred in the previous two seasons. The Bobcats are 6-0 when playing the Eagles in The Convo.

Last season, Ohio’s series against Eastern was rescheduled twice due to COVID-19 regulations. The two programs finally faced off against each other in a single match on March 8, where Ohio lost 3–0.

Central Michigan

Ohio is 7–4 against Central Michigan since 2010. At home, Ohio is 5–1 against Central Michigan.

Last season, the Bobcats’ season opener against the Chippewas began in a less than traditional fashion. A region-wide power outage forced the first match of the series to be finished the next morning. The Bobcats lost the first match 3–2 but won the second 3–0.

Players to watch

Eastern Michigan

Raeven Chase: Chase leads the MAC in blocks and is fifth for hitting percentage. The redshirt sophomore also led the MAC in blocks last season and was named to the 2020 Academic All-MAC Team

Central Michigan

Savannah Thompson: Thompson leads the Chippewas in kills, kills per set and service aces. She also ranks sixth in the MAC for both kills and total points.

Ohio

Caroline Clippard: Clippard had a career day in Ohio’s first match against Ball State last week. The freshman collected a career-high 22 kills and her 167 total kills this season is only two behind Ohio kill leader, Maggie Nedoma. Clippard makes a lot of noise on the court for a freshman.
