Today is Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2021. Here’s what you need to know:
Good morning,
On Tuesday, New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation from office. This will become effective in 14 days from Aug. 10, 2021. Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul, a fellow Democrat, will be taking over the rest of Cuomo’s term. She will soon become New York’s first female governor.
Cuomo’s decision came a week after a withering report from New York’s attorney general that documented almost a dozen women, employees included, being sexually harassed. Cuomo was also found violating state and federal laws. The third-term 63-year-old governor apologized to his accusers, while also making it very clear he did not cross boundaries that he thought required his removal from this position.
President Joe Biden stated that he thought Cuomo should resign from office as New York’s Governor, following the report. This definitely helped Cuomo’s decision of resignation, along with him facing an impeachment inquiry. Some politicians and citizens still urge an impeachment trial, possibly preventing him from running for office again. “This resignation is simply an attempt to avoid real accountability,” state GOP chair Nick Langworthy expressed.
