Athens County reported 49 new COVID-19 cases in the past week, and 110 cases are currently considered active. Athens remains in the red zone for virus spread.
Two Athenians were hospitalized due to COVID-19 this week and two new deaths were reported. The death toll currently stands at 52.
So far, 5,045 Athens residents have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, with 4,148 residents being fully vaccinated. Rising vaccination numbers come after an increasing number of groups become eligible to receive vaccinations.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced March 16 that Ohioans ages 16 and older will be eligible for COVID-19 vaccination beginning March 29. Ohioans can visit the state’s vaccine website to determine local availability and schedule appointments.
Ohio is currently vaccinating phases 1A-E and phases 2A-C. This includes Ohioans ages 40 years and older as well as residents with certain medical conditions such as cancer, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease and obesity.
Ohio University COVID-19 cases remain low, according to data from the OU COVID-19 dashboard. As of Saturday, OU reported a seven-day positivity rate of 0.4% for on-campus students.
Seven of the 29 OU residence halls are currently at the orange level for virus exposure and spread. Bush Hall currently has the highest seven-day positivity rate at 2.2%
University quarantine and isolation housing stand at 0.39% and 3.36% occupancy, respectively.
