1.) This isn’t your typical teen superhero story.
Invincible follows Mark Grayson, a high schooler whose father, Omni-Man, just happens to be the strongest superhero on Earth. When the story begins, Mark doesn’t have his powers yet, but that soon changes when he develops similar powers to his father. While this may sound exactly like every other superhero origin story, things soon take a dark and bloody turn that I will not dare spoil.
Let’s just say there are some valid reasons this show is rated TV-MA. The story is always twisting, turning and going places both the audience, and Mark himself, never knew possible. Making things even more exciting for fans of the comic is that series creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman (who you may know from creating The Walking Dead comic series) promises remixes in the comic’s events to keep everyone guessing. All I can guarantee is a lot of blood, guts and superpowered violence.
2.) The cast of characters and actors is incredible.
While I’ve only mentioned Mark and his father so far, there are so many more characters in this vast superhero universe. Playing these characters is an amazing cast featuring the likes of Steven Yeun, J.K. Simmons, Sandra Oh, Seth Rogen, Mark Hamill, Mahershala Ali, Ezra Miller, Jon Hamm, as well as many many others with familiar faces and voices. There’s simply too much talent to list in this cast.
I implore you to look up the full cast list yourself and see how many familiar faces you recognize. The characters of Invincible are among some of the best I’ve seen in comics. From Invincible himself to his friend Atom Eve to the universe trotting Allen the Alien; they’re all compelling and have their own plot lines whether big or small.
3.) The team behind the show is top-notch.
As mentioned previously, Invincible is being executively produced by Robert Kirkman. Its other producers include David Alpert (also of The Walking Dead fame), Catherine Winder (producer of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Dexter’s Laboratory), Maude Lewis (production manager of Black Panther and Doctor Strange) and Simon Racioppa (a writer for Teen Titans). With Amazon Studios and Skybound Entertainment handling the production aspects of the show, it’s in good hands. Amazon Studios is responsible for The Boys, another dark and bloody superhero show, though it is much more extreme and satirical in nature.
4.) It’s not the typical adult animated show.
Animated shows are typically half hour affairs. Invincible, as with everything else I’ve listed about, it is not typical. The new show will be an hour per episode, for the first season’s run at least. Eight hour-long episodes will make up the first season; three of which will be released on March 26 and the remaining five will release weekly on the following Fridays.
Most adult animated shows are also comedies; while Invincible will have comedic elements, it’s an action show at its core. With where the series eventually goes in both location and scope, it would be impossible to pull off in live-action, animation is and was the only way to go, especially since it gets to keep Ryan Ottley’s art style from the comics.
