City Council: Funding transfer for Richland Avenue handrail, poet laureate term extended

Athens City Council passed an ordinance Monday to appropriate $13,000 to the Street Rehabilitation Fund to install hand railing for the Richland Pedestrian Passageway.

During Council’s previous committee meeting, Athens Police Department Chief Tom Pyle said that the $13,000 will cover the manufacturing, shipping and installation of the railing.

Council also unanimously voted to extend current Athens Poet Laureate Wendy McVicker’s term by 11 months. McVicker’s term will now expire on Dec. 31, 2022. Several councilmembers expressed praise for McVicker’s work as poet laureate.

“I am very lucky to live across the street from Wendy McVicker, and if you don’t walk the eastside neighborhood, one of the things that she’s taken on before the snow was writing poetry on the sidewalk in front of her home, and it’s absolutely wonderful,” Councilman Sam Crowl, D-3rd Ward, said.
