Today is Monday, January 25. Here’s what you need to know:
Good morning,
In July of 2017, former President Trump announced that transgender individuals would not be able to serve in the military. President Joe Biden though, is expected to repeal the ban as early as Monday. As of now, if one identifies with gender dysmorphia, the ban blocks them from serving. However, those who don’t have it can serve as long as they do so under the gender they were born.
Trump’s reasoning behind the ban was that allowing them to serve in the military would impact medical costs drastically, but in reality “a 2016 Rand Corp. study commissioned by the Defense Department,” said it will truly have “minimal impact” on costs.
Former President Barack Obama was in the process of allowing transgenders to openly serve in the military before Trump reversed the policy and approved the ban.
