As the fall nights get colder, new shows and movies come to Netflix to curl up with. Content like Parks and Recreation and Magic Mike will be leaving in October, but the number of new content that is on its way makes up for it.
While non-original content such as season 6 of Schitt’s Creek (Oct. 6) and Her (Oct. 1) is coming to the streaming platform, much of what’s to come this fall is Netflix original. Here are some of the best new shows and movies coming this month:
Emily in Paris (Oct. 2)
This new comedy-drama is Sex and the City meets the City of Lights. Lily Collins stars as Emily Cooper, a twenty-something marketing executive from America. The show features her journey moving from America to Paris to work for a French marketing firm. She struggles to balance her new career and love life all while adjusting to the new culture around her.
Dick Johnson Is Dead (Oct. 2)
Director Kirsten Johnson’s new documentary focuses on her father Richard “Dick” Johnson’s struggle with dementia, as he pokes humor at his illness and enacts imaginative scenes of his nearing death. These include falling down staircases and acting out his own funeral. As he creates these morbid scenes, Kirsten showcases the tragic fall of a dementia patient. This black comedy will leave you not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
Hubie Halloween (Oct. 7)
Starring Adam Sandler, this star-studded film is sure to make you laugh and scream. This comedy horror tells the story of Hubie Dubois, who acts as the town’s Chicken Little, spending every Halloween trying to keep the town safe. But as the people keep disappearing, Dubois must convince the town that monsters are real and save his town.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (Oct. 9)
From the producers of The Haunting of Hill House, this show tells the story of a young nanny hired to look after a man’s orphaned niece and nephew. Starring You’s Victoria Pedretti as the nanny Dani Clayton, the young girl starts to see the spirits that continue to haunt the Bly Estate. The show also stars Henry Thomas and Olivier Jackson-Cohen.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Oct. 16)
The story of this groundbreaking trial not only tells the racial justice of over 50 years ago, but also reflects how little progress we’ve made today. This legal drama follows the trial of the Chicago Seven, who were anti-Vietnam War protesters charged with the intention of inciting a riot at the 1968 Democratic convention. While facing trial, these protesters must also face issues regarding the judge’s biases against them and their lawyers. Starring Watchmen’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Bobby Seale, he and the rest of the Chicago Seven must prove their innocence both to the jury and to the public.
Rebecca (Oct. 21)
This modern adaption of the novel by Daphne du Maurier stars Mamma Mia’s Lily James and Call Me by Your Name’s Armie Hammer. Rebecca tells the story of a newly married woman Mrs. de Winter, discovering secrets about her husband’s previous dead wife Rebecca. While her husband, Maxim de Winter, does not seem to be done mourning his dead wife, his new wife must find out how she died and battle the jealous housekeeper, who is obsessed with Maxim.
