Marvel Studios has recently announced it will be producing a TV series based on fictional superhero Ms. Marvel, or Kamala Khan. This will be the sixth television series of phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will be released on Disney+ and feature Marvel's first Muslim character.
Ms. Marvel is a superhero that is a part of Marvel Comics and who is now Kamala Khan. While the name Ms. Marvel has been around for decades, Kamala Khan is a more recent character. She was introduced to take over the label in 2013 through a comic book series. The title Ms. Marvel has been around since 1968 and was Carol Danvers until 2012 when she then transitioned into Captain Marvel.
Kamala Khan is a teenage, Pakistani American, living in New Jersey. In her youth, she lived an everyday life trying to balance her religious beliefs and fit in at school. One day Khan encounters Terrigen Mist, which activates dormant inhuman genes within her. Thus, unleashing her superpowers of elasticity, changing size, shapeshifting, and healing. Upon discovering her powers, Khan created a costumed identity and, having been an admirer of Captain Marvel her whole life, chose to follow her legacy by adopting Ms. Marvel's discarded name. She becomes a local hero and teams up early on with other heroes like mutant Wolverine and even her idol Captain Marvel.
Marvel Studio President Kevin Feige announced at D23, The Official Disney Fan Club biennial exposition event, the Ms. Marvel TV series will be released after the Hawkeye spin-off show. This projects its premiere tentatively sometime in 2021.
While there is no official release date, Iman Vellani has been cast as Ms. Marvel. Vellani is a Canadian teen actress, and this will be her first onscreen debut. Even though this is Vellani's first role, she’s already making her mark in the entertainment industry. She was a part of the 2019-2020 Toronto Film Festival Next Wave Committee. This highly-selective group consists of 12 teens assigned to decide which films would most impact their peers.
The directing team for the series has been cast as well. The diverse and creative lineup includes Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon and Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy. Arbi and Fallah are known for reviving the Bad Boys franchise after a 25-year hiatus with the hit 2020 movie, Bad Boys for Life. Menon has the group's most TV experience, directing various episodes of numerous shows like The Walking Dead and Outlander. Chinoy is well known for her documentaries, having won two Oscars, one for Saving Face (2012) and one for A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness (2015).
Ms. Marvel is an up and coming superhero that has taken off in the comic book world and, soon, the TV industry as well. This highly anticipated Disney+ TV series will bring superhero Kamala Khan to life as a role model and inspiration for young girls and youth everywhere.
