Ohio has officially decided it’s time to start getting cold and with that comes the realization that fall is upon us. September is coming to an end, October is just around the corner and before we know it, Christmas will be all over everything. But, in an effort to try to get time to slow down a little bit and enjoy the start to the fall season, I’ve put together some movie recommendations to keep this time of year going strong -- maybe with a little help from my girlfriend who isn’t as much of a winter fanatic as I am. And to my surprise, there’s actually a fair amount to keep the TV going over the coming months.
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
In my eyes, Charlie Brown is the kickoff to just about every single holiday known to man, especially so for Halloween and Thanksgiving, though. These specials can be viewed before their respective holidays or as many times as desired after and in between. It’s near impossible not to get into the fall spirit after watching either of these classic cartoons about the titular Peanut and all of his friends.
Remember the Titans
Football movies and sports movies in general inherently work as films to watch during fall months. They take place during the season and are almost always feel-good viewings that leave you with a smile. Remember the Titans happens to just be a personal favorite, but there are countless others: The Blind Side, Rudy and Invincible being just a few.
The Conjuring
Fall brings with it Halloween, which of course brings with it, spooky season. And spooky season means it’s time to double down on some horror movies. I could list hundreds of horror films to watch, but if I had to single out just one it would have to be The Conjuring. It, and the films in the universe it created, are pure, terrifying horror films that are bound to keep you entertained and feeling spooked. Classics like The Shining or The Silence of the Lambs are also great to watch this time of year.
You’ve Got Mail
This film kind of acts like The Conjuring in that it’s really just fun to watch most romantic comedies during the fall season. You’ve Got Mail just so happens to be set in New York City and stars Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, so it’s kind of hard to top. When Harry Met Sally is a close runner-up, though.
Tim Burton
No, really, that’s the recommendation. Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Dark Shadows, Frankenweenie, you name it and Burton’s iconic gothic fantasy-horror style pairs fantastically with the fall season. I’ll even go as far to say that The Nightmare Before Christmas is a fall must-watch, even though I will always stand firm on the ideal that it better serves as a kickoff to Christmas.
Fantastic Mr. Fox
This one’s a bit of an oddball when compared to the others that have come before it, but trust me on it. Not only does this Wes Anderson flick have a ton of style, wit and heart, but the color palette itself screams fall. Heavily decked out in yellows and oranges, this movie is sure to get you into that cozy fall feeling.
Really, there are so many movies that go hand in hand with fall. From Halloweentown and Hocus Pocus to Ghostbusters and Casper, the list could go on and on. So hopefully these, paired with some other personal favorites I didn’t include, are enough to stretch out the fall season and keep Christmas at bay.
For a little while longer, anyway.
