Weekender Briefs: What’s happening this week

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, a lot of events have been canceled or rescheduled. However, some organizations and Athens groups are adapting to the Ohio stay-at-home order and hosting events online through virtual services, like Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Here’s a list of some events still happening this week:

Friday, June 12

Bangers 2: Secret of the Ooze at 9 p.m., hosted by WOUB Public Media, DJ B-Funk and DJ Barticus. Join these DJs as they spin some great tracks until 2 a.m. You can stream the event through Twitch.tv or on Instagram @bartykutz.

Saturday, June 13

Saturday at the CPA at 11 a.m., hosted by Chesterhill Produce Auction. Join them for a special Saturday auction featuring fresh local produce, handcrafted wood products, flowers and livestock. The livestock portion will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Monday, June 15

Silver Lining Moments at 10 a.m., hosted by ARTS/West and the Athens poet laureate. Join Wendy McVicker for a weekly reading of a poem of her choice that she hopes will bring joy and comfort to listeners in this uncertain time. People can tune in through Facebook.

That’s What She Said! from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on WATH 970 AM / 97.1 FM. Tune in to hear Molly Prudenti St. Clair, Esther White-Thomas, Lynne Genter, Aubrei Krummert and Carol Blue for the “That’s What She Said!” show.

Putting All Your Readings Online (Legally): Quick Solutions at 10 a.m., hosted by Alden Library. Subject matter experts from across the university will lead workshops focused on course design, teaching strategies and other related resources. Wednesday, June 17

Bi+ Identities and Beyond the Binaries at 3 p.m., hosted by the OU LGBT Center. Join Robyn Ochs, a nationally renowned activist and speaker, who will lead this workshop that explores and dismantles some of the stereotypes bi+ people face and gives some tools for challenging biphobia and bi-erasure.

Business Before Hours at 8 a.m., hosted by Athens Area Chamber of Commerce and Bickle Insurance Services. Join this professional networking service that will practice COVID-19 safety protocols while providing a way to connect with other professionals. Refreshments from Brenen’s Coffee Cafe will be provided.

Thursday, June 18

SpeakOUt Summer 2020 at 4 p.m., hosted by the OU LGBT Center. Join this Pride Month event with a virtual panel to hear and share stories from LGBTQ+ people about their experiences and identities. Email lgbt@ohio.edu or DM on social media to be added to the Microsoft Teams event.

Zoom Webinar Lunch & Learn: Cybersecurity for Businesses at 12 p.m., hosted by Small Business Development Center at OU. This event will teach about securing systems and protecting your company from cyber criminals. Eva Bloom, an education specialist with OU Credit Union, will help uncover methods fraudsters use to take advantage of gaps in small business cybersecurity.
