Well, it’s the moment The Good Place audience has been waiting for: The four humans have finally made it to the real good place. With only one episode left until the series finale, there’s not much time for any more conflict. However, this week leaves the four humans and Michael (Ted Danson) to completely fix the good place.
Last week’s episode ended with the four humans and Michael completely fixing the good and bad place systems, and the humans officially being admitted into the good place.
This week’s episode shows the humans entering the good place, Michael and Janet (D’Arcy Carden) at their sides.
Though they expected the good place to be their eternal paradise, they couldn’t have been more wrong.
As soon as they get there, something seems extremely off. Everyone seems to be acting like zombies: no motivation to do anything, wandering around out of complete boredom and lacking almost any conversation skills.
Eleanor (Kristen Bell) and Chidi (William Jackson Harper) meet one of Chidi’s favorite philosophers, Hypatia of Alexandra, who is played by Lisa Kudrow. Hypatia, or Patty, tells them that the good place is significantly flawed, because people feel trapped there after having seen and done everything they want to do.
Chidi and Eleanor work to develop a plan to fix the good place once and for all. Meanwhile, Michael is accidentally thrown into being in charge of the good place. He is now the sole good place architect and is left with all of the problems the good place is riddled with.
The three team up to create a solution to the good place, which proves to be a difficult task. However, they quickly realize what they have to do: create another door where people can walk through and have their journey officially end.
The four humans, Michael and Janet create a new door for when people feel satisfied with their time in the afterlife, they can walk through it and their time in the universe will be over. It won’t hurt, it will be a peaceful experience, and it’s completely optional so that people can decide when they’re ready.
“You led great lives,” Michael said. “You earned your place here. So stay here as long as you’d like. Use the green doors to see and do every single thing you want to see and do, and when you’re ready, walk through one last door and be at peace. Does that sound good?”
Everyone is thrilled with the option. Not only do some people take the opportunity to go through the door, but they also are now motivated by the thought of having an official end to make something of their time in the afterlife.
The episode ends with Michael creating the perfect houses for each of the humans, and Chidi and Eleanor share a romantic moment where they talk about how blessed they feel to be able to relax and spend time together.
This week’s episode felt like it could’ve been the end of the series, so with the real finale next week, it’ll be interesting to see what happens to all of the audience’s favorite characters.
