2019 was the second warmest year ever recorded; Athens High School to name football stadium after Joe Burrow

Today is Thursday, Jan. 15, 2019 Here’s what you need to know:

Good morning,

2019 was officially the second warmest year on record around the globe and 1.8 degrees higher than the historical average, according to a government report on Wednesday. The higher average temperatures are due to human activities that release greenhouse gases and emissions of carbon dioxide such as energy production and transportation.

“We crossed over into more than 2 degrees Fahrenheit warming territory in 2015 and we are unlikely to go back. This show’s that what is happening is persistent, not a fluke due to some weather phenomenon,” Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, said per ABC News.

Although the rising temperatures make small day-to-day weather changes, climate experts are claiming that the slightest change in average temperatures can trigger serious consequences that are unable to be reversed. If the trend continues, the warming oceans will destroy ecosystems and more unprecedented bushfires will occur as well.

“We are experiencing the impacts of global warming unfolding literally in real time,” Noah Diffenbaugh, senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, said.
