After taking a break for the holidays, Supernatural is back. Cas (Misha Collins) comes back to the bunker to help with Sam (Jared Padalecki)’s gunshot wound. Meanwhile, Dean (Jensen Ackles) drives out to Texas to take on a hunt on his own. Here’s a recap of the episode if you weren’t able to watch:
Dean solves a case on his own
During the previous episode, Sam helped an old crush and Cas took on a djinn.
Dean heads out on his own to Texas where he finds a lead of a girl gone missing. When Dean makes his way to Swayze’s Bar, he runs into his old hunting friend, Lee Webb (Christian Kane), who owns the bar. Lee and Dean catch up and drink a few beers. The two sing karaoke and Dean even makes reference to the season four episode, “Yellow Fever.”
At the bar, Dean runs into Sally Anderson (Georgia Bradner), the girl who reported her friend, Angela (Madelyn Grace) missing. When Dean investigates, he finds the car and Angela’s body in the trunk. Lee hits Dean in the back of the head and knocks him unconscious.
When Dean comes to, he realizes Lee tied him to a chair and stuck an IV in his arm. During Lee’s last hunt, he found a monster called a madrid and as long as he feeds it blood, it gives him money, health and everything he’s ever wanted, hence the bar. To further appease the madrid, Lee killed Angela by draining her blood.
Lee starts Dean’s IV, but Dean manages to break free and slice off the madrid’s head. With no mercy, Dean stabs Lee with a pool cue because while he’s not the typically monster, Lee falls into the category.
The episode is reminiscent of the season one episode, “The Benders,” where Sam and Dean are kidnapped by humans that hunt people for sport.
Earlier in the episode, Lee says that Dean “can’t just lip-synch ‘Eye of the Tiger’ when no one's watching,” which is a reference to an outtake of “Yellow Fever” where Ackles lip-synced the song in the back of the Impala. After Dean and Lee’s karaoke duet, Dean comments that he’s never gotten a standing ovation before, which is a reference to when people threw food at Dean’s karaoke when he was demon.
Sam almost dies
When Dean leaves, Sam and Eileen (Shoshannah Stern) start bonding. It becomes clear there is a relationship forming between the two, but right when the two might kiss, Cas walks in and wants to see Sam’s wound. Cas wants to probe Sam’s wound because he thinks the gun fired off a piece of Sam’s soul in Chuck. When Cas probes further, there’s a burst and Sam is slammed into the wall and is unconscious.
Cas calls Sergei (Dmitri Vantis), a shaman, to fix Sam, and Cas threatens to burn Sergei alive if he doesn’t fix Sam’s wound. Sergei shows up and explains that Sam is dying; his soul is connected to “something or someone somewhere.” It’s being stretched like a rubber band and eventually, it will snap. Sergei says he can fix him, but he makes Sam worse on purpose.
He speeds up Sam’s death in order to get Death’s Key, which apparently is supposed to open up Death's library. Cas says no deal, pulls out a picture of his niece and says he sent someone to watch her and with one word, she’s dead.
Sergei agrees to undo his damage and for the time being, Sam is back to normal. His wound his still there, but he is no longer unconscious.
Chuck is weak
Dean comes back from his hunt and Sam tells him about his wound. Sam says that he saw inside Chuck’s head and saw how weak he was. According to Sam, they can beat God.
