Today is Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. Here’s what you need to know:
Good morning,
The poor potato harvest season that the U.S. and Canada experienced this year are leading processors to find potatoes elsewhere, leading to a potential french fry shortage.
The potato shortage is due to the unusually cold and wet weather that was experienced during the harvesting season. Some growers in top potato producing states in the U.S. may not be able to fulfill their contracts with processing companies. This could be a major factor in the shortage considering the U.S. is the fifth largest potato producer in the world.
If your love of french fries is unmatched, do not fret yet — there will not be much of a change for consumers at many fast food restaurants. Big chains like McDonalds, Burger King and Wendy’s have already entered into contracts for the year that will keep french fry prices the same, even through the shortage. Other french fry carriers, however, may have to make a slight uptick in prices.
