OU announces LGBT Center director finalists

Ohio University announced Friday the three finalists for director of the LGBT Center.

OU students, faculty and staff members will be able to ask the candidates questions after they each give a presentation when they come to campus in late November.

The first finalist, Micah McCarey, is scheduled to present Nov. 20 from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. in Room 231 in Baker Center.

McCarey is currently the interim director of the LGBT Center, according to his curriculum vitae. He is currently a doctorate student specializing in decision-making in the individual interdisciplinary program.

He graduated from OU’s Honors Tutorial College in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in communication. He also graduated with a master’s degree in human development in the individual interdisciplinary program in 2008.

McCary is also the assistant director for East Green and Diversity Initiatives.

The next finalist, Nicolas Franco, will have an open forum Nov. 21 from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. in Room 006 at 31 S. Court St.

Franco, who uses they/them pronouns, is currently the Pride Center manager at Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington. They are also an instructor for introductory statistics for the behavioral sciences.

They earned a doctoral degree in leadership studies from the University of San Diego in 2016. They also have a master’s degree in women’s studies that they earned from San Diego State University in 2010.

Franco earned their undergraduate degree in social work and women’s studies from California State University.

The last finalist, Kerr Mesner, will present Nov. 22 from 2:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. in Room 006 at 31 S. Court St.

Mesner earned a doctorate degree in education in 2014 from the University of British Columbia in Canada.

Mesner also got a master’s degree in 2010 in theological studies from the Vancouver School of Theology in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Mesner also earned a bachelor’s degree in humanities in 1999 from the College of New Rochelle in New York City.

Mesner is currently a visiting assistant professor of women’s and gender studies at Wells College in Aurora, New York.

There is a search committee comprised of 13 members of the university, including administrators, undergraduate students, a graduate student and faculty members.

Tyrone Carr was named interim director of the LGBT Center in January. OU also hired Jan Huebenthal as the LGBT Center’s assistant director in February, according to the news release.
