After Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan)’s escape into the wild during last week’s episode of The Walking Dead, Carol (Melissa McBride) attempted to sneak out of Alexandria, but Daryl (Norman Reedus) decided to follow her. When he stopped her, Carol said that she was trying to hunt down Negan.
However, after the two had ventured further, she told Daryl she wanted to destroy the Whisperer’s horde of walkers. Daryl warned Carol that it could get them all killed, but the two continued anyway. As expected, they ran into trouble and Daryl was surrounded by walkers. He covered himself in their guts and was able to mask his scent, but when he found Carol, he discovered she had taken a Whisperer hostage.
Meanwhile, Eugene (Josh McDermitt) tried to rebuild his radio using the satellite parts and eventually made contact with a woman’s voice. The two are skeptical of each other, but build trust and make an agreement to keep talking in the future, but only in secret. The woman stated if she hears someone else’s voice, she will stop communicating entirely. Fans of the comics know that this could be a link to Commonwealth, an elaborate society. With Maggie (Lauren Cohan) off in some mysterious place, could the two be connected?
Finally, Negan was shown with Beta (Ryan Hurst), who he met at the end of the last episode. The two easily got on one another’s nerves and Beta wanted to kill Negan, however, Alpha (Samantha Morton) wanted to keep him around for a while. Negan performed tasks for them, such as skinning walkers and carrying things, but it wasn’t enough for Beta, who led Negan into a horde of walkers to die.
Yet, the next morning, Negan showed up covered in blood and pledged his allegiance to Alpha. Alpha whispered in his direction and Negan smiled. It’s unclear whether Negan genuinely wants to team up with the Whisperers, or if he’s trying to infiltrate the group on behalf of the communities. Either way, bloodshed is ahead.
