The finale of American Horror Story: 1984 is heartwarming, but frankly really disappointing.
Last week’s episode ended with Benjamin (John Carroll Lynch) reuniting with his mother (Lily Rabe), and leaving much to be answered in the finale.
This week is the finale, and though it provides some explanation, it’s also poorly executed and doesn’t do much to redeem the poor quality of the season.
A new character is introduced: Bobby Rector (Finn Wittrock), Benjamin’s son. The episode time jumps 30 years from 1989 to 2019, and shows Bobby trying to find answers at Camp Redwood about his father.
He meets Montana (Billie Lourde) and Trevor (Matthew Morrison), who explain to him that they’re all dead, and that they’ve been protecting him from Ramirez (Zachary Villa) for the past 30 years.
However, Ramirez breaks free and is able to stab Bobby. The ghosts collectively save him, and Montana tells him to go see Donna (Angelica Ross) for more answers.
At the asylum where Donna now works, Bobby talks with her and figures out it was Margaret (Leslie Grossman) who killed everyone and not his father. She assures him that Margaret got what she deserved and was killed by the other campers and thrown over the camp boundary.
Bobby then begins to think it was Donna who had been sending him money his whole life instead of his father, but she tells him it wasn’t her. The two get suspicious and decide to investigate. They discover Brooke (Emma Roberts) didn’t actually die while killing Margaret, and she’s lived a happy life.
After Donna and Brooke reconcile, they discover Brooke has been the one sending money to Bobby. He decides to go back to the camp and try to see his father.
When he gets there, he finds Margaret, who had actually died on the campgrounds and had been in hiding for years, waiting to kill Bobby.
Benjamin, at the last second, shows up and saves Bobby, and the two share a heartwarming moment. Bobby also meets his grandmother, and says one last goodbye to the campers while they take care of Margaret.
“Get out of here and never come back,” Montana said. “But don’t forget us.”
Bobby gets away and leaves to start his new life.
This season was definitely not AHS’s shining star, but it had some good moments. The finale, however, is a disappointing way to end the season.
