TV Review: ‘How to Get Away with Murder’ confronts ICE Agents and border security

How to Get Away with Murder seems to be returning to its roots with its final season, focusing on individual cases in each episode.

Thursday’s episode highlighted immigration from Mexico and ICE Agent treatment. Annalise (Viola Davis) put Connor (Jack Falahee) and Asher (Matt McGorry), who took Laurel (Karla Souza)’s now-vacant seat, in charge of an immigration case. When they arrived, the two found a young boy who was arrested at the border and separated from his family.

Elsewhere, Annalise discovered that Gabriel (Rome Flynn)’s mother, Vivian (Marsha Stephanie Blake), was in town amid the FBI’s investigation into Annalise and company. When Annalise spotted Vivian talking to the FBI agents, she decided to confront her. During the confrontation, Annalise revealed to Vivian that Gabriel killed Vivian’s ex-boyfriend Paul by making him overdose.

Connor used previous court cases decided by the Supreme Court to defend the young immigrant boy. The rulings stated that international law decided kids should not be tortured and that the boy had been mistreated under ICE. While the judge is somewhat skeptical at first, she decided to put the boy in foster care, winning the case for Connor.

Bonnie (Liza Weil) tried to find dirt on Vivian to run her out of town and found a sealed file in her record. As she continued to snoop, the FBI agents arrived and told her she was fired from the DA’s office, effective immediately.

After Michaela (Aja Naomi King) realized Annalise knew her father, she attempted to find him with Oliver (Conrad Ricamora)’s help. After multiple dead-ends, Michaela discovered that her father died in prison a year ago. Michaela immediately targeted Annalise, screaming that if Annalise had told her about her father sooner, she would’ve been able to meet him.

In a flash-forward at the end of the episode, Michaela is being interrogated by the FBI. They show her a picture of a fire poker and tell her that her fingerprints were all over the murder weapon. With a tear-stricken face, Michaela says she wants to see her lawyer.
