The Ohio University Police Department posted a statement Thursday on Twitter regarding an unsubstantiated report of an active shooter at Bromley Hall earlier in the morning.
At about 1:56 a.m., OUPD received a report of a possible active shooter in Bromley Hall, according to the statement.
“A female resident reported people hearing screaming along with the sound of popping noises,” according to the report.
OUPD officers arrived in two minutes and swept the building with the assistance of the Athens Police Department. No evidence of such activity was found, and no victims were located.
Officers determined that the sounds likely came from a group of residents “engaged in loud behavior in the hallway,” according to the report.
After receiving the call, OUPD was prepared to send a campus-wide text alert until officers at the scene advised that there was no need to do so, according to the report.
“To be clear, there was no active shooter, but we commend the caller for reporting the concerning circumstances,” OUPD said in a tweet.
OUPD asks residents to report any suspicious activity they might see to the authorities.
