Freshman Heather McGuire was named the Mid-American Conference co-Offensive Player of the Week following a breakout performance when she scored her first goal of her collegiate career.
Originally a defender, McGuire came into Sunday’s match and played midfielder for the first time, and the results couldn’t have been much better for the Bobcats. McGuire scored two goals and registered two assists in the 7-0 victory in the lone match Ohio played this week against Southern Illinois.
McGuire was one of five newcomers for Ohio to find the back of the net against the Salukis on Sunday. Freshmen Tristan Whalen, Olivia Page, Maddie Young and junior transfer Konstantina Giannou all scored in the Bobcats’ highest scoring performance since 2000.
With the Bobcats still undefeated and setting their sights on extended action, McGuire has felt the team work to integrate newer players rather than relying on proven teammates to carry the load.
“They really welcomed us,“ she said. “They brought us in as a family.”
Ohio will look to extend its 5-0 start to the season •Saturday when it plays Robert Morris. First touch is set for 4 p.m. at Chessa Field.
