This week’s episode of American Horror Story: 1984 is a little confusing, really weird and ends on the most frustrating cliffhanger.
Last week’s episode ended with Mr. Jingles (John Carroll Lynch) escaping prison and heading back to Camp Redwood, and no one believing Brooke (Emma Roberts) about Mr. Jingles and her attacker, Richard Ramirez: the Night Stalker (Zach Villa) infesting the camp.
This week’s episode continues the great ’80s tropes, however the plot is a little odd.
Brooke is trying to convince everyone her attacker is at the camp. Meanwhile, the boys are showering and getting ready for the camp to open when Xavier (Cody Fern) is visited by an old frenemy. A man who saved him from death and helped him sober up, but who also made him star in gay pornography, comes to the camp to tell him he has to do more.
Xavier obviously doesn’t want to make anymore porno films, so he points the man in the direction of Trevor (Matthew Morrison), who is notorious for having a large penis.
However, that’s when Mr. Jingles attacks and kills the man, along with having killed the detective on his case moments prior. The counselors see all of the deaths and finally believe Brooke, deciding it’s time for them to leave. There’s just one problem: Their keys are back in the cabins.
The group splits in two and heads back to the cabins to retrieve their keys, and the episode ends with each group being cornered in their respective cabins.
“We’re all going to die,” Xavier said.
The counselors are facing peril, and Margaret (Leslie Grossman) is making a new friend. Margaret partners up with Richard, convincing him to murder Mr. Jingles. There is some really odd sexual tension between the two characters, especially when Richard asks to see Margaret’s feet.
Though the season seems to be the standard humanized horror elements, 1984 now has the supernatural element to it, with a camp counselor from Mr. Jingles original killings refusing to die. No matter how many times he’s murdered, he keeps coming back to life. Why this is happening hasn’t been explained, but it’ll be interesting to see how this fits with the rest of the story.
The plot is pretty standard, but doesn’t feel as exciting as it could. The sexual tension between Margaret and Richard is probably the scariest part of this week’s episode. Audience conspiracy theories are beginning, and they can’t wait until next week.
