Weekender Briefs: Take a study break and pet some puppies; hear the best of OU’s student a cappella groups

Friday

Food Truck Friday at 11:30 a.m. on the Morton Hall lawn. Visit all your favorite Athens food trucks, and don’t miss a special appearance from Dr. May’s Thai Kitchen. Menu prices may be discounted for the occasion. 

Admission: Free 

Choral POPS! at 6:30 p.m. in Glidden Recital Hall. Decompress before finals week by listening to student choirs the Singing Men of Ohio, the Ohio University Women’s Ensemble, and OU Singers perform songs from a variety of musical genres.

Wren’s Guitar Student Showcase at 7:30 p.m. at Donkey Coffee and Espresso, 17 W. Washington St. Local guitarist Megan Wren’s guitar students Mikayla Schuyler and Ally Meyer will showcase their skills at their debut performance. The show will also include performances from Wren and Seth Canan & The Carriers.

Admission: Donations appreciated

Seabury Quinn, Jr. Playwrights’ Festival at 8 p.m. in the Elizabeth Evans Baker Theater in Kantner Hall. Enjoy works written by graduate students in the OU School of Theater, with performances spanning two weeks. See Sibyl by Trip Venturella on Friday evening.

Admission: Free with OU ID; $10 for adults and $7 for other students/seniors

Saturday

Ratha Con 2019 at 10 a.m. at the Athens Community Center, 701 E. State St. Whether you’re into Harry Potter, superheroes or anything in between, you’ll geek out at Athens’ pop culture convention. 

Admission: $10 for adults; $7 for kids 12-17; kids 11 and under free

17th Annual A Cappella Invitational at 7:30 p.m. at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Enjoy an evening of student a cappella performances from Title IX, The Picardy Thirds, New Chords on the Block, The Tempo Tantrums, Leading Tones and Section Eight and Resonance A Cappella.

Admission: Free

Lobsterfest 2019 at 8 p.m. at The Union Bar and Grill, 18 W. Union St. Enjoy lots of music and fun from many different artists, including MACHINE GIRL, Galen Tipton, Kali Dreamer, Lung, DANA and Burger Big. This event is hosted by ACRN Media.

Admission: Free; $2 for under 21

Trust Me Dance Party with DJ B-Funk at 10 p.m. at Casa Nueva, 6 W. State St. Let loose before finals week at the last Dance Party of the season, complete with good music and exciting visuals.

Sunday

Little Fish Yoga at 11 a.m. at Little Fish Brewing Company, 8675 Armitage Road. Bring your own mat to this yoga session designed for people of all skill levels.

Puppy Fest at 11 a.m. at South Beach. If studying for finals has you overwhelmed, take a break and play with some puppies! This event is sponsored by Rough Cut Collective and will feature games, contests and dancing.
