City Council: Committees to discuss Bailey’s Trail agreement

Correction appended.

Athens City Council will have three committee meetings, including the committee of the whole, transportation committee and the finance and personnel committee, at Monday’s meeting.

The three committees are slated to speak on three issues relevant to Athens residents.

The committee of the whole will discuss an agreement regarding Bailey’s Trail, a mountain biking trail that will run through Wayne National Forest. This project is spearheaded by the Athens Bicycle Club and Wayne National Forest. Councilman Peter Kotses is a member of the club.

Wayne National Forest approved the 88-mile trail in December 2017, and the trail will link local communities with older trails in Strouds Run State Park and Sells City Park through the 21-mile Hockhocking Adena Bikeway.

The transportation committee will be in talks to apply to make Athens a Transportation Improvement District (TID) under the Ohio Department of Transportation, or ODOT.

According to ODOT’s website, TIDs “promote intergovernmental and public-private cooperation of transportation resources and investments.”

The finance and personnel committee will speak on financial appropriations and transfers.
