In Thursday’s episode of Supernatural, fans had their tissues ready for an emotional episode. If you couldn’t watch the episode live, here’s what you missed:
Dean had textbook suicidal behavior
In the last episode, Dean (Jensen Ackles) made plans to charter a boat to take him out to the Pacific Ocean and throw himself, in a steel coffin, overboard.
Through the episode, Dean exhibited tell-tale signs of suicidal behavior. The show isn’t a stranger to the topic, but this episode felt raw and unwavering. Dean wasn’t going to be swayed. The promo clip that showed Dean in the coffin having a panic attack was just a dream. Dean woke up with bloody fingernails and scratches on the wall.
In the car, Dean tried to initiate the “I’m sorry” conversation with Sam (Jared Padalecki), which the audience has seen before, but this time it felt like the real deal. Dean was genuinely sorry to Sam for not putting up with John (Jeffrey Dean Morgan)’s poor parenting skills.
The episode was tough to watch because it felt — and it’s felt like before — that Dean wants to die and has convinced himself he wants to die.
Sam couldn’t accept Dean’s death wish
Sam, on the other hand, was not putting up with Dean’s death fantasies. Throughout the episode, Sam was trying to find loopholes in the lore and contacting sources to force Michael out. No luck. In the car when Dean was trying to subtly apologize for his wrongdoing in life, Sam stopped him.
In the last ten minutes of the episode, Sam broke through to Dean. Sam, in a fit of tears and a solid right hook to Dean’s head, yelled at Dean to believe in them. It’s not like Sam to get emotional, let alone punch Dean into reality. Dean was overwhelmed with Sam’s emotional intensity and decided to go home and live at least until tomorrow.
Nick can’t reject Lucifer
Back at the hospital, Nick (Mark Pellegrino) escaped custody and went back to the house where his family was murdered. The air got cold, cabinets rattled and lights flickered, which brought fans back to the good ‘ole days of ghosts. Sarah, his wife, appeared, but he mistook her for Lucifer. She begged him to let go of Lucifer, but he couldn’t.
Donatello was reintroduced in the storyline
The last time the fans saw Donatello (Keith Szarabajka), he was soulless. Donatello was back and alive but barely. There is plot being introduced to the storyline. A prophet next in line was killing innocent people because he thought God was talking to him. That was impossible because Donatello, the present prophet, is still alive.
