Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) can never seem to keep their happiness. In Thursday’s episode, that was made more apparent.
While Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Deluca (Giacomo Gianniotti) were figuring out their relationship last episode, Amelia and Owen learned Betty’s real name is Britney and that her parents are looking for her. Betty had given Amelia a fake phone number to call and had one of her friends pretend to be her father. Of course, fans couldn’t go without meeting the real parents.
They were able to located Amelia rather quickly: “We need to talk to you about Britney,” the father said. “I think you know her as Betty.”
They tell Amelia the rehab center gave them her name when Betty ran away shortly after contacting them. Amelia is the one who breaks the news that they are grandparents.
A lot of normal things happen and the parents meet their grandson, but the mom, played by Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey, have a conversation about being close to addiction. It’s the first time in the show’s history fans saw the reverse effects of addiction and the toll it can take on a family.
“I missed her before she ran away,” the mother said.
Amelia opens up about her own addiction, which backfires when the parents want to take Leo with them.
“I am not leaving him here with another drug addict,” the father said.
That’s obviously a tough blow to Amelia, but it hits Owen even harder. He asks Amelia why she told them about her complicated past and blames her for the situation. Amelia has to bring him back down and remind him that he is just a foster parent and that it was his choice to let Betty be a parent.
“Her name is Britney and she’s never been much of a mother,” Owen said. “I think we both know that.”
It’s clear there is going to be a trial of some sort, and it just might break Owen and Amelia. They worked so hard to build up the life they have, and it may all come crashing down again.
