The nominees for the 91st Academy Awards were announced by Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellis Ross Tuesday morning at 8:20 a.m. EST, and these nominees will be competing in the most competitive Oscars in recent history.
Picking up 10 nominations each are Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma and Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite. Mexican director Cuarón brought Netflix its first Best Picture nomination, but the autobiographical masterpiece was also nominated for Best Foreign Film. The Favourite nabbed nominations for all its leading ladies: Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone.
Picking up eight nominations are Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born and Adam McKay’s Vice, which was also nominated in three acting categories. Cooper may have found himself in the Best Actor race, but the first-time director wasn’t nominated for his achievement behind the camera.
Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther became the first superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture, thus showing there is no real need for a Best Popular Film category.
