Ohio suffered a humiliating defeat to Virginia on Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The Bobcats were able to put up just 9 points to Virginia’s 29, as the Cavaliers cruised their way to their 11th victory of the season.
There were, however, some bright points to Ohio’s day — starting with Ohio’s first wrestler of the day, redshirt junior Zac Carson.
Carson was able to log three takedowns in just the second period, which fueled him to an exciting 14-13 win over Virginia’s Jake Keating.
The Bobcats were then kept off the scoreboard for the next six matches, including losses by sophomore Aaron Naples and redshirt junior Shakur Laney. Both suffered major decision losses to opponents that are currently ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes.
Senior Cam Kelly and redshirt junior Kade Kowalski were both able to secure late victories for the Bobcats.
Kelly dominated his opponent, Scott Kiyono, taking an 8-3 decision win in the penultimate match of the day, and Kowalski followed suit with a 6-3 decision win over Virginia’s Mike Murphy.
The Bobcats will return to conference play next week as they will travel to Northern Illinois to take on the Huskies on Jan. 27 at 2pm.
