Athens County Commissioners discussed the search for a new director of the Emergency Management Agency (EMA) at Tuesday’s meeting and will be holding interviews this week.
During the meeting, Chasity Schmelzenbach, the director of the EMA of Noble County, came in to discuss aspects of her position, such as cyber security, safe environments for protests and warning systems within the county. There was also a discussion of the location of a possible EMS station.
Athens County Commissioners also discussed Sustainable Nutritional Assistance Program, or SNAP. Jean Demosky, executive director of the Department of Job and Family Services, said, because the SNAP benefits were disbursed in January, there will be no money allotted in February.
Demosky said there was a huge response from the community in donations, including the Ohio University Credit Union and the Athens Community Center.
Commissioner Chris Chmiel discussed a plan for sustainability within the Athens community. This plan could include a sustainability-based internship program for graduate students through a collaboration with Ohio University and the Athens City Council.
