In Thursday’s episode of Supernatural, all was not merry and bright. Supernatural has never explored the feel-good holiday episode; it has always been demented and took a twisted turn on lore. The midseason finale was no exception. If you couldn’t watch the episode live, here’s what you missed:
Michael is back and he is out to play
In the last episode, Jack (Alexander Calvert) died and was resurrected, but it cost Cas (Misha Collins) his life. The Empty, at some point when Cas is happy and forgets about the deal, will drag Cas into nothingness. The episode ended with Naomi (Amanda Tapping) rewarding Cas with Michael’s location.
This week picked up with Michael (Felisha Terrell) gearing up to carry out his war.
The team had Michael’s location and a plan to hurt Michael enough to kill him. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Jack went to get an egg that Ketch managed to get his hands on. The egg was said to put Michael back in the cage. Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Cas went to get the spear from dark Kaia. Michael gathered his army in Kansas CIty, where they’ll turn the whole town.
Garth was a fly on Michael’s wall
Garth (DJ Qualls) came out of retirement to pose as a werewolf apart of Michael’s army. Garth swallowed Michael’s archangel grace as an initiation act that made the monsters superhuman and immune to silver. Because Garth was on the inside and Michael isn’t naive, Michael knew the boys’ plans. He was at the shipping plant that Sam and Jack were at, kidnapped Jack, and melted the egg, putting a wrench in Team Free Will’s plans.
After some regrouping, Sam, Dean and Cas marched into Michael’s location with guns blazing and rescued Jack. Garth wolfed out, but not before Sam choked him out, saving his life.
It’s almost like the writers are trying to play the highlight reel of the show’s most memorable characters. In just the first half of the season, we have seen Jody, Charlie, Garth, Rowena, Bobby and Mary. No complaints here, though.
Michael possesses Dean (again)
After Sam, Cas and Dean rescued Jack, Dean made it his priority to kill Michael with the spear. In a dramatic fight, Dean nicked Michael, which caused Dean to gain the upper hand. When Dean went in for the kill, he couldn’t — his vision swam again. Michael’s vessel collapsed, and Dean snapped the spear in half.
Surprise, surprise. Michael possessed Dean as the one true vessel. When he left Dean’s body, Michael opened the door just a crack for repossession. Now, he will break Dean and crush him into further depression. “He’s gone,” Michael said.
The episode ended with Michael saying he had an entire army waiting for his command to kill. The screen fades to black as Michael snaps his fingers
The repossession is not a shocker considering the hype Michael had. This is the first character Ackles is playing aside from Dean. It’s depressing, sure, but not surprising. The audience can only wonder how Dean will come back from the possession.
