North Lancaster Street house fire leaves pet dog dead

A fire on 230 N. Lancaster St. on Wednesday afternoon left a family’s pet dog dead.

The cause of the fire is unknown, Athens Fire Chief Robert Rymer said.

The Plains Fire Department, Athens Fire Department and Athens County EMS were on the scene. The house is near Dairy Queen, 70 Columbus Road.

“I was just coming through to get lunch (at Dairy Queen) and now I’m stuck because they ran the fire hose across the lot,” Zev Martin, an Athens resident, said. “It’s heartbreaking.”
