Pioneering alternative-rock band Arctic Monkeys has finally released its new album, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. Released on Friday, the album follows 2013’s AM, which received both critical and fan praise. With the band’s new album, Arctic Monkeys changed its sound. Stepping away from their signature alt-rock vibes, Tranquility Base is funky and even a bit retro. In fact, the album seems to feature very little guitar.
Though the album has received mostly critical praise, the fan reactions are a bit mixed. Some people are on board with the new sound, while it seems like others were hoping for part two of AM. If you’re not a huge fan of the band’s new sounds, here are 7 of the group’s other songs to listen to instead:
1. “Fluorescent Adolescent”
Off of the 2007 album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, “Fluorescent Adolescent” is a song that instantly grabs you. With the catchy guitar grooves and impeccable songwriting from lead singer, Alex Turner, it’s easy to fall in love with this song.
2. “I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor”
This 2006 song is loud, in-your-face and a great addition to any playlist, all while ending right before three minutes. Featured on Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, the tune is sure to make you want to go out and dance on a dancefloor.
3. “No. 1 Party Anthem”
Off AM, “No. 1 Party Anthem” is a bit slower than the typical Arctic Monkeys song. It’s dreamy and a not-so-typical love song. It’s a definite listen if you’re a fan of the British alt-rockers.
4. “Pretty Visitors”
Arctic Monkeys hone in on a garage-rock sound with this song off 2009’s Humbug. It’s fast-paced, rambunctious and everything one could ask for in an Arctic Monkeys song.
5. “Mardy Bum”
“Mardy Bum,” off Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, is another song that’s not as loud and energetic as most of Arctic Monkeys’ songs, but it’s still arguably one of its best. Turner’s lyrics are near perfect, and the simplicity of the song gives it a certain charm.
6. “Piledriver Waltz”
“Piledriver Waltz” was originally featured on Turner’s solo extended play, Submarine: Originals Songs From The Film By Alex Turner, before being re-recorded for 2011’s Suck It and See. The song is full of charm and romance, so why not listen to both versions?
7. “R U Mine?”
Arguably one of their most popular songs to date, “R U Mine?” is a staple hit for Arctic Monkeys. The song opens strong and never wavers. With its heavy guitar and Turner’s signature vocals, it’s a must-listen.
