On A High Note: Upcoming summer sounds

Florence + The Machine, 5 Seconds of Summer and Troye Sivan are among many big names to have recently released new singles and hinted at new albums dropping this year, but for now there are no confirmed release dates. Here are some release dates that I've nailed down to help you handle your anticipation.

Arctic Monkeys – Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino

One of the most highly anticipated records in recent years is almost upon us. The alternative gurus have yet to release a single, but I doubt the suspense will lead to disappointment. Arctic Monkeys is one of the few consistently great bands right now; it is one of those rare bands that somehow manages to make each record better than the last. The band has not released a record since 2013’s A.M. after which it took a hiatus, allowing frontman Alex Turner to drop an album with his side project, The Last Shadow Puppets. It’s set to release May 11.

Blossoms – Cool Like You

The British rock band looks to follow up its impressive self-titled debut album. The five-piece released both a single version and an acoustic version of “I Can’t Stand It,” a catchy ode to an ex-lover. “When I was thinking of a plan/She sent the snow then took my hand/I shut you out, you changed my mind/The echoes fall beside the scenes where you would cry.” The album will be out April 27.

Lily Allen – No Shame

The British singer-songwriter has given us two singles off the new record so far, “Higher” and “Three.” “Higher” is a slow-tempo, soft-voiced indie endeavor with traces of dance beats bringing life to the backing music. It chronicles the falling out of a relationship in detail. In “Three,” Allen fine-tuned her high-pitched vocals for a more grounded result. The song is about missing a lover who is off doing their own thing. “My social calendar is busier than yours/I've been out making lots of friends/You can't play with us, cause you're always off on tour/One day I hope you'll meet them.” Allen’s album will be out June 8.

CHVRCHES – Love is Dead

“Get Out,” “Never Say Die” and “Miracle” and “My Enemy” with Matt Berninger. Berninger’s deep, melodic vocals and lead singer Lauren Mayberry’s high-pitched, chirpy ones seem too far on opposite ends of the spectrum to complement each other, but they mesh surprisingly well and the lyrics are perfectly fitted. “I got no more time to hear what you think about me/Because all your words are so cold, so callous, so clean/In the moment you could be honest, you could wake up, up/But your jealousy is more blind than luck.” It’s set to release May 25.
