Student Senate: Members discuss 'Finals Fest'

Five of the six resolutions at the second-to-last Student Senate meeting were passed.

The resolution to purchase food for an internal Student Senate study session did not pass. Anna Ayers, the senator who brought that resolution forward and a previous Post columnist, thought the money could be used to benefit the entire Ohio University community.

“Should we be spending money on something that is solely for us when we could be spending money on all students? Just something to keep in mind,” Ayers said.

The resolution to purchase supplies for the university-wide study session sponsored by Student Senate, called “Finals Fest,” was passed.

There was controversy over purchasing straws for the family picnic, an event held on South Green that is an alternative to Numbers Fest, but the resolution ultimately passed.

“I think the coolest part about it is that it’s a safe, fun alternative to Numbers Fest, which is great because a significant amount of the community and the school doesn’t go to Numbers Fest or maybe they aren’t comfortable, so it’s really cool that this is around,” Ayers said.

Both of the resolutions for planning the Unchained fashion show passed. Student Senate approved the purchase of 20 posters promoting the event, as well as using the Walter Rotunda to host the fashion show. The charitable event raises awareness for sex trafficking. Landen Lama, president of Student Senate, voiced his support for the event.

“I think it’s a really positive event that we are having on a very important issue that does affect parts of Ohio,” Lama said.

The resolution to purchase graduation cords and stoles was passed. Student Senate awards for senior emeritus and honors were given out at the meeting.
