A Boogie wit da Hoodie walked onto MemAud’s stage in camouflage gear at 9:40 p.m. on Saturday, providing his opening act DJ Bandcamp with nearly two hours of performance time.
“I was f---ing with it for the first 30 minutes, but then I started yawning,” Jacie Ray, a junior studying marketing and entrepreneurship, said.
Despite the late start to the night’s Sibs Weekend Concert, hosted by the Black Student Cultural Programming Board, the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium was turned into a club of sorts with people standing on seats and dancing in the aisles.
The hip-hop artist sang segments of his popular songs and collaborations, including “Beast Mode” and “Pills and Automobiles.”
Paul Drysdale Jr., a freshman studying astrophysics, views A Boogie wit da Hoodie as an inspiration because they are both from New York City. Drysdale’s favorite performances were “Beast Mode,” “Timeless” and “My S---.”
“It was a dope show,” Drysdale said. “When he played “My S---,” when he played that song, it was lit.”
The audience showed enthusiasm when the first notes to A Boogie wit da Hoodie's double platinum song “Drowning” played, and again when he performed “Timeless.”
Toward the end of the show, many fans threw shoes onto the stage, and A Boogie wit da Hoodie signed all of them. But his DJ, DJ Ominaya, told the women in attendance to throw some “bras and panties” up, which prompted one person to toss an undergarment onto the stage.
A Boogie wit da Hoodie ended his performance by explaining to the audience that he had not slept in three days and apologized for his lack of intensity. He promised the meet and greets would still take place then walked off stage.
David Giddens, a freshman studying pre-law, liked A Boogie wit da Hoodie’s energy throughout the show.
"He kept the crowd lit the whole time. It never died down,” Giddens said. “He was really interactive with everyone. I had a great time.”
