Hockey: Assistant coach named head coach of SPHL Roanoke

Dan Bremner, who was an assistant coach for Ohio's first 22 games of the 2017 season, was named head coach of the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs of the Southern Professional Hockey League.

“I am extremely proud of Dan and the opportunity he has earned,” coach Sean Hogan said in the Bobcats' announcement. “It is an opportunity he couldn’t pass up, and I, the team, and everyone around Ohio hockey wish him the best of luck in Roanoke.”

The Sarnia, Ontario, native was named Roanoke's new head coach after Sam Ftorek was relieved of his coaching duties on Monday, according to the Rail Yard Dawgs. Roanoke is 5-11-2 and sits ninth in the 10-team league.

Bremner will return to the league he spent six years in as a player prior to joining Ohio. Bremner appeared in 281 total games and registered 48 goals, •79 assists and 709 PIMs in the SPHL.

In his three months with No. 3 Ohio (17-4-1), Bremner worked primarily with the defense, and the Bobcats gave him credit for their success on the penalty kill, which is at 88.66 percent and third in the Central States Collegiate Hockey League.

“I am grateful for the opportunity I had with Ohio hockey and working with coach Hogan,” Bremner said. “I want people to realize that Ohio hockey is coached, operated and played at an elite level, and I am thankful for my time here. I wish nothing but success for the players and staff. In my short time with the hockey program, I grew close with the players, staff and community, and it is bittersweet moving on to this new opportunity.”
