Letter to the Editor: Statehouse abortion bills

Abortion is a decision that no woman (or male partner) takes joy in making. Quite the opposite, I imagine it evokes horror and pain. Yet, a woman’s rights to control what happens with her body is a fundamental right that must not be hindered. Yes, this is a controversial issue, which is precisely why we must hold our legislators accountable for any vote they take to restrict women’s rights.

Jay Edwards, our statehouse representative, recently voted to restrict a woman’s right to seek an abortion. Mr. Edwards spends a good deal of time making himself visible to the community at countless events where he commemorates the moment with a post on social media using the hashtag “fighting4southeastohio." He certainly isn’t fighting for women’s rights.

Please contact Mr. Edwards to voice your concern. This is urgent as another bill which would even more severely limit a woman’s right to choose is moving through the house. He can be reached at 614-466-2158.

The fight must continue with the State Senate. Our representative in that body is Frank Hoagland. He has voted to limit a woman’s right to choose in the past and he must know he can’t take these votes without consequences. He can be reached at 614-466-6508.

Apathy is not an option. These votes have real consequences that impact real people. Now, more than ever, we must make our voices heard.

Ray Reynolds is a constituent of Jay Edwards.
