Volleyball: Ohio struggles in Virginia

Ohio traveled to Charlottesville, Va., for the Jefferson Cup over the weekend.

After a four-set win over Howard, Ohio was swept in back-to-back matches against VCU and Virginia.

Starting strong

In the win over Howard, the Bobcats had three impressive performances: Lizzie Stephens, Tia Jimerson and Sara Januszewski each hit above .300 and recorded over 12 kills.

Coach Deane Webb made sure to give credit to the passing for allowing that to happen.

"Good job by our passers getting us in system enough to win the middle battle," Webb said.

The good passing and hitting performances, however, did not hold through the weekend.

Low hitting

In the three games over the weekend, the Bobcats did not top a .300 hitting percentage in any game, which include a .019 in the three-set loss to VCU.

Ohio also had 31 errors in the match against VCU, which is the third-most the Bobcats have had in a match this season.

Webb took responsibility for the loss.

"Our team wasn't prepared to play at the level required to win this match,” Webb said. “And that responsibility begins with me as the coach."

Moving forward

After a disappointing weekend, there is a lot of work to do for the Bobcats.

Webb said the work in front of the Bobcats is on the defensive end, and it will start Monday in preparation for the upcoming weekend.

The Bobcats will travel to State College, Pa. for the Penn State Classic on Sept. 15.
