Whether you’re Hispanic or have friends, family and classmates who are, Hispanic Heritage Month starts today, and it’s a great time to learn more about Hispanic culture.
Here are five facts about Hispanic Culture to celebrate the month:
- Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world after Chinese, according to Babble.
- The Hispanic population of the U.S. stands at more than 57 million, according to the 2016 U.S. Census.
- Nike is releasing a new collection of sneakers in partnership with four Latino artists in honor of the month, according to kicksonfire.com.
- As of 2014, the Hispanic population of Athens County is just more than 1,000, accounting for 2 percent of the population, according to the Pew Research Center.
- The commemorative month lasts until Oct. 15 and starts today because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, according to a website dedicated to the month.
