Bobcats offer their best tips for staying warm, stylish during the winter

Winter can be difficult to dress for, especially in temperamental Ohio. The weather changes at the drop of a hat, but no matter the weather, dressing stylishly is still an option.

By incorporating elements like layers, fashionable coats and warm socks, it is possible to both stay warm and look fashion-forward.

Kassandra Mullins, a grad student studying college student personnel, says layering up is the best thing to do in the cold weather. She said she tries to make the outer layer “cute” so she stays on trend.

“I usually wear fuzzy leggings under jeans,” Mullins said.

Mullins said her best tip to stay warm are good scarves to keep necks and faces warm, and wearing a bun with the scarf compliments anyone.

Mullins has a lot of peacoats that she has from secondhand stores that she loves.

“I’m very thrifty,” she said.

Mullins said her favorite winter outfit is “a nice sweater, jeans or leggings, combat boots and some cute boot socks.”

Mullins strives to keep warm while walking to class, and to stay comfortable.

“I like nice socks that are cute and fuzzy,” Mullins said. “I like to keep my feet warm.”

For a big night out on Court Street, a trend named by fashion magazine Elle is wearing turtlenecks underneath dresses. This outfit will keep someone warm, and looking their best.

Tyler Murphy, a junior studying strategic communication, said to wear warm coats when needed, even puffy ones. Elle named puffer jackets as one of the biggest winter trends this season.

Murphy said he used to have a “marshmallow coat,” but now has a nice, thick coat that’s insulated.

“I’m a big sweater fan,” Murphy said. “I’m a big supporter of gloves and a beanie.”

Murphy said his best fashion tip for guys is to invest in a pair of khakis.

“It’s a little bit classier than jeans, and it looks so nice,” he said.

Another warm option for men is to layer a button-down shirt underneath a sweater to look professional, and stylish.

Abby Siatkowski, a junior studying English, says during the winter months she wears darker colors, especially black.

“I have Michael Kors boots I wear a lot, scarves and a bunch of hats,” Siatkowski said.

Siatkowski tries to follow trends by looking them up online, and likes to ask her friend that studies fashion what is popular.

To go to class and stay warm, Siatkowski said she loves to wear sweaters.

“I love oversized sweaters, and scarves, leg warmers and throwing my hair up,” she said. “I go to H&M and Forever 21 and buy (a lot of) sweaters that are three sizes too big.”
