The nominees for the 89th Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning, and to no one’s surprise, throwback musical La La Land picked up the most nominations with 14. The film, which won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical, is tied with Titanic and All About Eve for the most nominations.
The sci-fi film Arrival managed to pick up eight nominations — including Best Picture. But the lead actress in the film, Amy Adams, did not get a nod. I assume it is due to steep competition in the Best Actress category. Meryl Streep picked up her 20th nomination in the Best Actress category for her role in Florence Foster Jenkins. Even though I enjoyed the film and Streep’s performance was, as usual, top-notch, someone else could have filled her nomination spot. I would much rather have seen Amy Adams, Jessica Chastain or Annette Bening in the category.
Similar to the Golden Globes, the film Sully was snubbed of big nominations, including Clint Eastwood for Best Director and Tom Hanks for Best Actor. Despite speculation that everyone’s favorite anti-hero was going to secure a nomination, Deadpool did not pick up any even though it reached blockbuster success on a relatively small budget. Missing from the Best Animated Feature category is Finding Dory. The foreign film Elle was snubbed of a Best Foreign Language Film nomination despite winning the Golden Globe in the same category. Still, the lead actress in the film picked up her own nomination in the Best Actress category.
