Wrestling: Ohio's inexperience shows in loss to CMU

Ohio’s overall performance against Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon at The Convo could be summed up by two of their ten total bouts.

The young squad was good, but just not good enough.

The Bobcats (4-4, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) lost to the Chippewas (2-0, 1-0 MAC) as they just couldn’t overcome some of their opponents nationally ranked wrestlers, as the Bobcats fell 22-12.

Ohio started the season 0-2, but rebounded with a win over West Virginia. The Bobcats remain third in the MAC, however, and trail only Missouri and Northern Iowa in the standings. Ohio has lost to Missouri (35-7) already, but faces Northern Iowa on Jan. 27 at The Convo.

Twice in the match, Ohio’s nearly pulled massive upsets, but just couldn't find the right moves to do so.

Up by just two points, Kade Kowalski faced No. 6 Justin Oliver. The Ohio 149-pounder seemed to be overpowered, but at times showed promise, pulling off an early takedown against his opponent. Kowalski lost in a 15-7 major decision.

Now trailing by two, Ohio had Cullen Cummings hit the mat — and he seemed to be in control over No. 11 Colin Heffernan throughout the tight bout. But, the Central Michigan 157-pounder pulled out a takedown in the waning seconds to earn a decision victory.

The Chippewas won their first meet in conference play with their win over the Bobcats. Ohio fell to .500 in conference play.

The Bobcats will travel to Northern Illinois on Friday for their fifth MAC meet of the season.
