Letter: Response to Sarah Grace's opponent's false claims

Why, oh, why did Sarah Grace's opponent's political party send out a dark, ugly, misleading and “Godless” political mailing? I’m talking about the dark, grey advertisement claiming, falsely, that she wants to remove God from our laws, our oaths and our values. Not true!

When someone asked Sarah Grace if she would require all students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, she wisely answered in accordance with an honorable United States Supreme Court decision.

In West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette (1943), the Supreme Court held that the First Amendment’s free speech clause prevents schools from forcing students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. That decision holds true even today, long after the words “under God” were added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954.

Sarah Grace honors the fact our 94th District of Ohio includes people from many religions, including people who believe that God’s name is too sacred to use in the political arena.

Please vote for Sarah Grace, the candidate whose political mailings are 100 percent honest and who recognizes our freedom of religion.

Wenda Sheard is a lawyer and a citizen of Athens.
