Football: Basham earns Defensive Player of Year, Hagan Freshman of year; others make All-MAC teams

Defensive end Tarell Basham and safety Javon Hagan were given postseason awards today by the Mid-American Conference

Basham was named MAC Defensive Player of the Year and Hagan was named Freshman of the Year.

Basham, a four-year starter on the Bobcats, started every game this season, leading the team and the conference in sacks with 11. He also has 14.5 tackles for loss.

He became the career all-time Ohio sack leader this season, a number he's gradually pushed up to 29. Basham, a senior, recently accepted an invitation to the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.

Hagan, named Freshman of the Year, was a ballhawk this season, and led the Bobcats with three interceptions and five forced fumbles. His five forced fumbles are tied for the MAC lead and fourth in the country. He became a full-time starter midway through the season and didn't look back.

In addition to Basham and Hagan, Ohio had numerous players earn spots on All-MAC teams.

Kicker Louie Zervos, linebackers Quentin Poling and Blair Brown and Basham earned a spot on the All-MAC First Team.

Offensive tackle Troy Watson and Hagan were voted to the All-MAC Second Team.

Center Jake Pruehs, wide receiver Sebastian Smith, defensive tackle Casey Sayles and punter Michael Farkas were named to the All-MAC Third Team.
