Quinton Maxwell (7) surveys the field against Eastern Michigan in Peden Stadium Saturday afternoon MATT STARKEY|FOR THE POST

Football: Quarterback talk headline of Frank Solich press conference ahead of Kent State

Coach Frank Solich might have a change to make. Or he might not.

After Quinton Maxwell came in at quarterback for starter Greg Windham on Saturday against Eastern Michigan, questions arose surrounding the decision of who will start at quarterback against Kent State this Saturday.

Solich, however, promptly shot down any questions regarding the starter for Saturday during Monday's weekly press conference.

“We’re just coming off the game. We’ll meet with the players, and the coaches and I will continue to meet about that," he said.

Windham went 9-for-17, and Maxwell went 17-for-26 against the Eagles. Maxwell threw for 188 yards, while Windham threw for 103.

“It’s about putting your best player on the field. We’ve always worked at doing that," Solich said. "Obviously, (the) number of reps plays into somewhat in terms of whether a guy’s an experienced quarterback, and he’s shown that he’s played great ball at times in the season you don't want to just throw him out there and have it be a deal where he’s put in the position where he’s not the starter."

Windham is a redshirt senior, and Maxwell is a redshirt freshman. Maxwell has not made a college start in his career, and Windham is in his first season as a starter.

While noncommittal about the situation, Solich added that he feels both quarterbacks should be ready just in case two are needed.

"You still need to have probably two quarterbacks ready to play and that will be our main goal," he added. "And our main goal will be to put the guy on the field that’s playing the best.”

Outside of the quarterback position, there were other issues at hand for the 4-3 Bobcats.

The secondary allowed a 74 percent completion percentage, 347 yards through the air and three touchdowns.

"Explosive passes and explosive plays — we have done a pretty good job on those," Solich said. "Teams are about to move the ball on us though. They have been able to hit easy throws, and that is why the percentage is so high."

With changes, possible and not, swirling about the team, the importance of the Kent State game has grown immensely over the past few days. That fact isn't lost on Solich.

A loss would drop the Bobcats to .500, in both overall record.

"You just have to be ready for every ball game," Solich said. "You have to play a smart game, coach a smart game, and give yourself your best shot.”
