Over 250 people attended a Cake Walk organized by Bobcathon outside of Baker University Center on Wednesday.

Bobcathon cake walk breaks Guinness World Record

With the intention of supporting a good cause and saving a swipe on their meal plans, hundreds of students attended Bobcathon’s record-setting cake walk event Wednesday.

The cake walk, which was held in the Baker Center parking lot, involved participants walking along numbered pieces of paper as a DJ played various hit songs. Whenever the music stopped, so did the participants, and the person standing on the winning number received a free cake.

Although the attendance didn’t reach the 500-person level hoped for by organizers, there were more than 250 participants — enough to establish a new Guinness World Record and cause traffic jams for walkers.

Samaria Gonzalez, an undecided freshman, attended the event with her learning community and enjoyed the widespread campus involvement.

“I feel like (the event) gets everybody together,” she said.

Bobcathon, the student organization that organized the cake walk, holds many events throughout the academic year to fundraise for charitable organizations. Bobcathon itself is a 12-hour dance marathon intended for fundraising that takes place early each Spring Semester. All proceeds from that event support the Ronald McDonald House of Central Ohio. The Ronald McDonald House is a national organization that houses families of children in the hospital while those children go through treatment.

Prior to the walk, a family who stayed at the central Ohio Ronald McDonald House while their child was in critical health spoke to the participants at the event, thanking them for their participation and for helping to fundraise for the organization.

Kennedy Rutt, a sophomore studying exercise physiology pre-med, is a member of Bobcathon and hopes that Ohio University hosts more charitable events like it in the future.

“I’d love to break a world record,” Rutt said. “I like cake, too.”

Kendra Lutes, a senior studying communication studies, serves as the president of Bobcathon and was proud of the awareness and money raised by the event.

“I think the biggest effect this event in particular had was to just sort of bring the community together to accomplish a goal,” Lutes said. “I think it brought a lot of great awareness to Ronald McDonald House, as well as the Alumni Association, Homecoming Week and Bobcathon.”

Following the cake walk, Bobcathon will be hosting several fundraising events throughout the academic year, such as a Dads Weekend pancake breakfast, a dodgeball tournament and the 12-hour dance marathon.

“I think (the cake walk) kind of gives people in the community and OU students a taste of what the Dance Marathon is like, and it’s a cool way to kind of integrate them into the organization,” Lutes said.
