The ABCs of Greek Life: Watermelon Bust proved to be a fun, competitive philanthropy event

Columnist Erin Franczak reflects on her experience at the recent philanthropy event Watermelon Bust, hosted by Lambda Chi Alpha.

What do guys do best? Smash stuff? Well, Lambda Chi Alpha had the idea to combine that and philanthropy by hosting Watermelon Bust. It was a hit, and the Lambda Chi president said he loved the way the Greek community came out to support the event.

The event check-in started at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, and the games began at 1:00 p.m. The first event was a costume contest. I got to dress up like Minnie Mouse and wear a tutu, which I was pretty excited about. Then, there was the canned food drive to help the United Campus Ministry, as well as a watermelon carving contest.

After those events were finished and points were totaled, the real fun began. There was a watermelon toss where each team had to throw huge chunks of watermelon into a bucket. Watermelon pong, the next event, may have been one of my favorites. It was like beer pong, but instead of ping pong balls and red Solo cups, there were watermelons and garbage cans.

There were many watermelons hurt in the making of this event. Watermelon shot put was a favorite for some of my team. Another classic was the watermelon bowling. A large blue tarp was set up and lots of baby oil along with chunks of watermelon was poured on the track. Each team delegated two players to slide down the track and hit as many of the bowling pins (two-liter pop bottles) as possible.

The final event was a watermelon relay. The first team member had to crawl across the tarp carrying a watermelon toward the second team member, who then had to crab walk to another team member who was waiting to catch a piece of watermelon in their mouth. After catching the piece, the team member had to grab the watermelon and move it to the thrower (me). I had to throw to another team member doing dizzy bat. Then, I ran the full watermelon to the two team members who together had to drag the watermelon to the end where the last member was waiting to smash it. The event was an all-around success and everyone had a blast doing it. I highly suggest getting a team together in the future whether you’re in Greek life or not because it’s so much fun and competitive.

If you missed out on Lambda Chi’s event, but still want to participate in an upcoming philanthropy event, there are two more events coming up in the next few weeks. On April 21, Alpha Epsilon Pi is having its annual “Buy a Brother” event. Everyone should think about donating because all the money goes to the Athens County Dog Shelter (and dogs and cats are awesome, so you should support them.)

Sigma Kappa will also be having an awesome event on April 17 that everyone should check out. It’s called Pancakes on the Porch and is at its house. It’s $1 per pancake or $5 for unlimited pancakes. How much better can that get? Plus, all the money is going to a great cause.
