City Council to discuss street closures, improvements on West Union Street

Improvements on West Union Street would include tables for pedestrians to eat and socialize.

City Council members are still hoping to add more outdoor seating for pedestrians Uptown. The proposed measure will be under consideration at Monday night’s meeting.

The proposed area would likely be near South Congress and Court streets, and would include tables for pedestrians to eat and socialize, council members said at the April 11 meeting.

The project, however, could cost the uptown area six or seven parking spaces on the north side of West Union Street.

Council members are also making plans for Boogie on the Bricks, and intend to close several blocks of Court Street for the event.

Boogie on the Bricks, a festival on Court Street featuring live music and vendors, is set for June 25 this year.

Council will discuss closing part of West Union Street to Court Street to West State Street at 6 a.m. the day of the event, an hour earlier than last year.

Judy Wymer, event coordinator for Boogie on the Bricks, came forward at the March 14 meeting to request the time change so that workers will be able to get the event up and going in time.

Council will also discuss annual street paving repairs and a sidewalk assessment for Franklin Avenue, and will begin planning for West Union Street improvements.
