Ohio University President Roderick McDavis speaks at the Student Senate meeting Oct 7.

Student Senate campaign season begins on social media

Passive campaigning lasts a week and allows candidates to use web pages, social media, instant messaging and schedule meetings with student organizations, according to the passed resolution which altered the timeline of senate elections.

Earlier this year, Ohio University Student Senate voted to make changes related to the length of its election campaign season.

Those changes are taking effect this week, as Thursday marks the first day of the election's "passive campaign period."

Passive campaigning lasts until March 17 and allows candidates to use web pages, social media, instant messaging and schedule meetings with student organizations, according to the passed resolution which altered the timeline of senate elections. The "active" campaign period will begin next week.

Two tickets, UNITE and Impact, will compete for Ohio University Student Senate seats in the body's election on •March 29 and 30.

It didn’t take long for the UNITE ticket to start passive campaigning. Thursday morning an Instagram account, website, Twitter account and Facebook page were published for the ticket.

As of this article's publication, Impact did not have a presence on the Internet.

Jordan Kelley, the presidential candidate on the Impact ticket, said he has seen UNITE’s internet presence.

“We’ll definitely be releasing stuff in the near future,” Kelley added.

UNITE's website features information about each candidate on the ticket, as well as its platform.

“UNITE's mission is to bring Bobcats together in the common goal of creating meaningful change,” according to the website. “We recognize that with a large and diverse community comes a wide variety of passions, interests, and needs; we believe that the Student Senate should be a place to UNITE students to make their goals a reality.”

UNITE is also using the website •Twibbon to allow people to add a banner to their social media profile pictures saying, “I’m voting UNITE March 29th-30th.”

Courteney Muhl, UNITE’s vice presidential candidate, said her ticket is working hard to make sure everyone running for UNITE is involved and excited.

“Right now we're just excited about educating the student body about our people and our platform and getting prepared for the active campaigning stage,” Muhl added.

Landen Lama, UNITE’s campaign manager that is not running on any ticket, said members of the ticket are “super pumped” about the start of passive campaigning.

“We have a great social media team,” Lama, senate’s current lead parliamentarian, said. “We're gonna start scheduling meetings with student orgs and, you know, really get our platform out there.”
